Mounted overall with lacquer panels with Chinese buildings and garden scenes, the waved, shaped and moulded liver marble top above two short drawers with lacquer fronts surrounded by stiff-leaf bands, above a long drawer simulated as two conforming short drawers and above a shaped apron with pierced foliate C-scrolls centred by a scallop-shell, the rounded angles with vertical banding headed by a pierced strapwork and foliate mount, the waved sides with two conforming panels and the back with semi-detached columns, above the shallow cabriole legs terminating in C-scrolled sabots headed by a foliate spray, both back legs with restored splits, label to top of commode inscribed 15.325

Lot Essay

The inventory drawn up after the death of the wife of Louis-Charles de Gouffier, marquis O'Heilly, who consequently married the daughter of Philyppeaux de Pontchartrain in 1731, mentions a commode corresponding to this description. In the salon of the château O'Heilly is listed:
une commode de bois verni de la Chine placqué et bois de violette à un grand et deux petits tiriors fermant à clé garni de poignée de cuivre en couleur, le dessus de marbre griotte de Flandre petit gris 100 livres.

This type of commode is characteristic of the production of marchands merciers such as Hennebert and Charles Darnault.
