Lot Essay

Jacques Bircklé, maître in 1764.

All the characteristic elements of Bircklé's production can be found on this commode. The central marquetry vase can further be found on a stamped secrétaire en pente sold from the Stroganoff collection, Lempke, Berlin, 12-13 May 1931, lot 212. It can also be found on a closely related and stamped commode from the collection of the 6th Earl of Rosebery at Mentmore, sold Sotheby's house sale, 18-20 May 1977, lot 404.

Similar vases, which seem to have been inspired by ornamental prints, also adorn a stamped secrétaire formerly in the collection of Viscount Gage, Firle Place, and sold by maître Anaf, Lyon, 16 March 1980.
