Lot Essay

Jacobus Buys was a pupil of Cornelis Pronck and, from 1743, of Cornelis Troost. He painted mainly portraits and theatrical scenes, for example A Scene from the Play 'Lubbert Lubbertse of de Geadelbe boer', signed and dated 1761, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Later in his career, he painted many religious scenes, influenced by Jacob de Wit.
