Lot Essay

Little is known about the artist, who was born in Strasbourg in 1601 or 1602, and settled in Amsterdam in 1622. He painted fruit still lives in the manner of Balthasar van der Ast. Other works by him include a Still Life with Apples, signed and dated 1635, in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Strasbourg and a Still Life with Strawberries in a porcelein Bowl and a Roemer, signed and dated 1653, in the Saarland Museum, Saarbrücken, which can be compared to the present picture in the treatment of the roemer (see E. Gemar-Koeltzsch, Luca Bild-Lexicon: Hollandische Stillebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert, Germany, 1995, pp. 182-3, nos. 54/1 and 54/3).

We are grateful to Dr. Sam Segal for the attribution made on the basis of a photograph.
