Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Dieter Koepplin for confirming the attribution from a photograph. Dr. Koepplin relates the present painting to three pictures of similar size published by M.J. Friedländer and J. Rosenberg, The Paintings of Lucas Cranach, London, 1978, p. 148, no. 391C, D and E (for 391E, see also, Weltkunst, XXXVIII, no. 20, 15 Oct. 1968, illustrated in colour on the cover), which he also believes to be the work of the younger Cranach. For a closely related version by Lucas Cranach I, see D. Koepplin and T. Falk, catalogue of the exhibition Lukas Cranach, Basel, 1976, II, pp. 533 and 536, no. 388, fig. 284.
