Lot Essay

See the note to the previous lot.

The subject of the present picture is given as The Family of Darius before Alexander except by Daniels, who points out that it represents Coriolanus being persuaded by the noblest women of Rome, led by his mother, wife and children, to raise the siege of Rome and retire into exile, as recounted by Livy.
