A drawing showing the buildings on the right of the present painting and presumably used in its execution is in the Museo Correr, Venice (Morassi, op. cit., 1975, no. 593, fig. 585). This is inscribed, possibly by the artist, 'Ca(s)tello Cogolo p(er) andar a Trento' and in the opinion of Morassi it was drawn from nature during Guardi's journey to the Val di Sale in 1778.
Lord Rothermere formed an exceptional collection of pictures by Francesco Guardi, which included the famous set of four views of villas painted for John Strange (Morassi, op. cit., 1973, I, pp. 436-7, nos. 680-3, and II, figs. 635-42; the view of the Villa Loredan at Paese was sold in these Rooms, 8 Dec. 1989, lot 114). These were not included in Lord Rothermere's posthumous sale at Christie's, in which no fewer than fourteen paintings by (or then said to be by) Francesco Guardi were sold. They included Morassi nos. 319, 434, 504 and 632 but his catalogue entries make it clear that Professor Morassi was unaware of the Rothermere sale. Another group of Guardis from the Rothermere Collection was sold at Christie's, 1 December 1978, lots 36-8.
