Sold with a letter from Gustav Gluck, dated 21 November 1951, who states that, from a photograph, he considers the present painting to be a 'very fine, genuine and characteristic work by Anthony van Dyck'. In his Klassiker der Kunst: Van Dyck, Stuttgart, 1931, p. 117, Gluck illustrates a version of the portrait, as belonging to J. Goudstikker, Amsterdam, and formerly in the collection of Lord Stanley.
