A Prince Hal jug of Ralph Wood type
Circa 1785
Modelled and seated on brown rockwork in half-profile to the left, in white hat and shoes, brown jacket with slashed sleeves and green breeches, holding an oval shield moulded with a lion, inscribed IOHN OF GANT(sic.) in his left hand and a sword in his right, on a square base (restoration to front of hat, sword, shield, left arm and left foot, restored crack round left thigh and round his lower part, rockwork and base, broken from base and repaired, cracks to face, neck and chest)

Lot Essay

Cf. Price, no.1, pl. XLII, nos. 72 and 75, pl. XLIX and pl. L. Price asserts (p.88) that the jug is modelled on George IV in costume masquerading as Henry VIII (known as Prince Hal or King Hal). See also Mackintosh, pl. 102. A similar example was sold in these Rooms, 19 May 1986, lot 136.
