Lot Essay

Captain Harvey of Rolls Court was a personal friend of the Prince Regent. This portrait was possibly done at Brighton in the early 1790's. Williamson records the existence of a replica by Varley of this portrait, which passed down another branch of the Sinclair family. Another portrait of Captain Harvey was in the collection of Lord Ronald Gower in 1893.
