Lot Essay

Chalon entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1797. He became a member of the R.A. in 1807, resigning in 1808 to found the Sketching Society with his brother and F. Stevens. He exhibited at the R.A. from 1810 and was elected A.R.A. and R.A. in 1812 and 1816.

Chalon was appointed Painter in Water Colours to Queen Victoria and his portrait of the young Queen was reproduced on many early versions of colonial stamps. His subjects are mainly historical and literary.
