Lot Essay

This drawing dates from 1801 when Constable went on a three week tour of Derbyshire. The free washes and pencil work show the strong influence of Constable's mentor at this time, Sir George Beaumont (see Constable a Master Draughtsman, exhibition catalogue, Dulwich Picture Gallery, 1994, p.88, no.2).
