The race for Doggett's Coat and Badge between London Bridge and Chelsea was started in 1715 and continues to this day. The prizes are presented at Fishmongers' Hall. The winner of the August 1845 race was F.Cobb of Greenwich Stairs, which explains the inclusion of Greenwich Palace in this watercolour. James Holland was living in Hastings at the time he painted it.
