Lot Essay

Keene produced the first book of his illustrations in 1842, and thereafter he worked on many books and periodicals, including the Illustrated London News. This is one of his drawings for Punch, which made his name and which date from 1851.

The accompanying inscription reads 'Old Gent (in agony): "Ph-e-e-w, conf- I wish you'd look where you step, Sir!", Passenger (leaving) - 'Christm'time only onshe year': "Beg ten thousand pard'I'Sh'Shir! Difficulty I find 'sh I shtep where I look." Punch, Jan 16, 1886.
