Oval and in the Queen Anne style, on spreading partly-fluted foot, the body applied with cut-card work and with a band of foliage, with two upcurved female herm, scroll and foliage handles, with gadrooned rim, marked on body and stamped beneath the base GARRARD & CO. LTD. 112 REGENT STREET W.

Lot Essay

The design for this cistern is similar to a Queen Anne cistern by Gabriel Sleath of 1710 from the collection of the Dukes of Portland, exhibited London, 25 Park Lane, W. 1., Loan Exhibition of Old English Plate, 1929, no. 153 and described in E. A. Jones, Catalogue of Plate belonging to the Duke of Portland, K.G., G.C.V.O., at Welbeck Abbey, London, 1935, p. 134
