Lot Essay

This picture would appear to date to circa 1618. Aspects of the composition such as the sitter's pose, his elaborate costume and the interior with draped table and oriental carpet can be compared to contemporary portraits attributed to William Larkin (fl. c. 1610-20) for example: those of Richard Sackville, 3rd Earl of Dorset, of 1613 and c. 1615 (R. Strong, The English Icon: Elizabethan and Jacobean Portraiture, London, 1969, no. 336 and 341) and that of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham of c. 1616 (R. Strong, loc. cit. no. 328). The elaborately embroidered doublet is also reminiscent of that worn by Margaret Layton of Rawdon (d. 1641) in the portrait of her by an unknown hand of c. 1620 which Christie's negotiated by private treaty sale to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, on behalf of the Executor of the Estate of Mary Viscountess Rothermere in 1994.
