Lot Essay
A general discussion of Lord Burlington's Chiswick Gardens is given in the previous lot.
The Upper River comprised those parts of the Chiswick Estate which were acquired from Sutton Court in 1727-8. As with the previous lot, a version of this view survives in the Devonshire Collection, although the latter shows less of the picture to the left and may have been cut down. The appearance of a third version of the present picture at Sotheby's on 9 March 1988 (lot 59, sold £36,000), suggests that there may have been a third set of pictures or at least third versions of some individual views.
