Lot Essay

The sitter, who was the nephew of Elizabeth, Lady Herbert (lot 2), was the son of Robert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon, a notable royalist, who he succeeded in 1643. He married successively, Elizabeth, daughter of Arthur, Lord Capel, and Mary, daughter of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsay.
