Lot Essay

These designs for costumes for Ladies in the Suite of Potiphar's Wife were commissioned by Diaghilev himself in Berlin in 1914. They were intended as promotional drawings for the forthcoming London season of the Ballets Russes in the Illustrated London News. It is likely that they were executed by Ernst Stern. The inscription of Bakst's name was done with the artist's approval and that of Diaghilev as recalled by Bakst's nieces, Mesdames Barsacq and Tsijkevitch who worked in Bakst's studio.
