Lot Essay

The posture of Peter the Great is similar to that used by Nikolai Ge for his well known painting entitled 'Peter the Great interrogating the Tsarevich Alexei' (1871), showing the despotism of the reforming monarch condemning his own son to death in the interest of the State.
