Lot Essay

The design for this pair of candlesticks was inspired by the well-known model by Juste Aurèle Meissonier from 1728. In the original, there is a cartouche chased with the arms of France, cf. H. Honour Goldsmith and Silversmith, (London, 1931), pp. 176-177.
