Lot Essay

This set of sights is of exceptional interest as they were designed for the .303 Lee-Metford rifle which was used as a match rifle by only a very few competitors at Bisley between 1898 and 1908. This was the era of the requirement, that the bore be not more than .315 and the rifle militarily stocked; the .256 Mannlicher rapidly became the favoured arm. Enquiries of Gibbs have revealed that rifle No. B2954 was completed circa 1898 and, most interestingly, G.C. Gibbs himself shot in the English team in 1900 with a Lee-Metford as also did the Hon. T.F. Fremantle (later Lord Cottesloe). The original label provides instructions for shooting each distance from 100 to 1100 yards, with the recommended angles for the Metford 200 grain bullet with a velocity of 2,075 f.p.s.
