The Merwin & Hulbert design provides a system in which the barrel and frame section beneath are attached to the rest of the pistol by the cylinder axis pin and by an interlocking section at the front of the frame. By pressing a spring catch, the barrel unit can be rotated about the axis pin and then pulled forward, thereby taking the cylinder with it
