Clive Gallop and Marie Partridge
Bentley - a fine and unique brooch in the form of a 'Blue-Label' radiator badge by Garrard of London. Exquisitely crafted in gold and white gold with diamonds set in a central 'B' motif and applied above delicately enamelled blue oval ground with raised beaded-pattern border to base; in turn surmounted upon a similar bordered surround having applied stylised wings with finely-chased feather pattern; the gold backing to the badge is inscribed and engraved "Marie".

Provenance
Clive Gallop had befriended Marie Partridge during convalescence at the end of World War I, along with W.O Bentley, leading to his involvement in developing and test driving the newly designed 3 litre cars. On an outing in experimental chassis No.2 in company with Marie; he invited her to take the wheel thus becoming the first lady to drive a Bentley, in fact exceeding the speed of 60mph, a most impressive feat in those days especially for one in her teens. As a reward for her spirited drive he presented her with this specially, commissioned splendidly decorative brooch.

Lot Essay

Accompanying the brooch is a handwritten copy-letter from Miss Partridge dated 1975, describing the event in detail. The vendor is the God-daughter of the late Miss Partridge, and the daughter of the late Clive Gallop.
