1960 BENTLEY S2 CONTINENTAL DROPHEAD COUPE
COACHWORK BY PARK WARD
Registration No. Not currently UK registered
Chassis No. BC77LAR
Engine No. A76BC
Metallic silver with dark blue leather interior.
Engine: V8, overhead valve, 6,230cc; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Brakes: four wheel drum; Suspension: front, independent with coil springs and wishbones, lever arm hydraulic dampers; rear, live axle with semi-elliptic springs, lever arm hydraulic dampers. Left hand drive, power steering.
In 1936 Park Ward patented the all-steel bodywork which was to have such a profound effect upon their coachbuilding methods; at the time they were producing as many as eight bodies a week, mounted on the Bentley chassis. Following the Second World War they were employed exclusively by Rolls-Royce on their production and experimental work and were to eventually to amalgamate which H.J. Mulliner in 1961. The Continental models were always faster than the standard production cars and had a tremendous air of distinction. They continued to sell well, even with a large price margin which was almost fifty per cent more than the standard Silver Cloud. The straight-through styling of this S2 Continental was entirely the creation of Park Ward, although after the corporate merger the style was to be developed into the "Chinese Eye" model which was built in larger numbers.
This very fine example has been in the same family since new, the current owner's uncle, Mr. Vaccaezza, having purchased the car from the 1960 Automobile Salon in Buenes Aires, Argentina. In fact, the first person to drive it was the current owner as his uncle allowed him to drive it out of the showroom! Mr. Vaccaezza only kept the car for five years before selling it to his nephew, who since that time has treated it with utmost care. The car has not been restored but enjoyed on special occasions such as exhibitions and some family outings. The condition of it now is as one would expect of such a well-maintained example and the recorded mileage stands at around 100,000kms. The panelwork is exemplary and the paintwork has a finish which is equally good. The interior is trimmed with its original dark blue leather upholstery and black carpeting and all the interior woodwork is in excellent condition, as is the brightwork. Mechanically, the car is described by the owner as being in excellent condition, having been carefully maintained in its family ownership.
A beautiful drophead Bentley with a superb provenance.
