FROM THE ESTATE OF THE LATE MRS. OLIVIA WRIGHT
1971 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SL SPORTS CONVERTIBLE
Registration No. TRY 200
Chassis No. 113044220023217
Engine No. 13098322015754
Silver with blue leather interior.
Engine: 6 cylinder, single overhead camshaft, 2,778cc, 170bhp at 5700rpm; Gearbox: automatic transmission; Brakes: four wheel disc; Suspension: independent all round with coil springs, single joint swing axle at rear. Right hand drive.
The Mercedes-Benz 280SL was the last version of a series of "Pagoda Top" sports Mercedes which were built with progressively larger engines, namely 2.3, 2.5 and 2.8 litres. The 280SL was available from the Autumn of 1967 through to the Spring of 1971 and was, by definition, both more luxurious than the earlier models as well as being more powerful. Fit and finish were impeccable as usual, and coupled with Mercedes' usual mechanical robustness these sporting two-door models are still highly desirable.
This 1971 model appears to be a fine original example, now showing just over 58,600 recorded miles; the car has been sensibly dry stored and shared garage room with the late Mrs. Wright's other Mercedes in this sale. The panelwork is straight and the door, bonnet and boot fit are all good - the paintwork has faded slightly in places. When inspected, the engine started first time from cold and settled down evenly - we noticed a small blow from the exhaust system.
The interior is all good and usable and the Mercedes has the optional sideways-facing rear seat. A Radiomobile radio is also fitted. We did not take the hard top off so are unable to comment at the time of writing on the condition of the soft top, but would ask interested parties to contact us during the auction weekend.
The Mercedes is offered for sale with the attractive registration TRY 200 as confirmed on the V5 registration document - alas there is no further paperwork provided. Nonetheless, it certainly appears to be in good usable condition.
