Madanpur was one of a number of sites near the holy city of Gaya which was visited by the Daniells during their exploration of the region in March 1790. They found a small shrine under a boulder, with a simple pavilion built on top of an adjacent rock: this was typical of the quasi-natural sacred sites of the region (compare the cave at Patharghata, lot 15). Also in Madanpur was a structural temple (which provided the subject for Oriental Scenery, vol.V, no.16), but this had been desecrated by Muslims; the more rural shrine was evidently still active.
