Lot Essay

Built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583, the fort of Allahabad stands at the confluence of the Ganges and Jumna rivers. This place was, and remains, a very important centre of Hindu pilgrimage, as indeed the Daniells witnessed, since their visit coincided with an eclipse of the moon.

'6 November 1789: Spent the whole day in the fort, Chiefly employed in making correct drawings of the ornaments in the Buildings which we have made View of' (Journal).
