Lot Essay

The bombé fronted bergère-chair with foliate and turn-fluted baluster arm-supports and fluted and columnar legs, capped by flowered tablets, derives from a Louis XVI pattern of the 1780s. Patterns for seats with related features were published in A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, fig. 9 and T. Sheraton's, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793, pl.XXXV.
