This type of 'Canterbury' plate-stand is discussed in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, London, 1803, p. 127, pl. 28 and a related example is illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol. III, p. 163 and was sold by the Earl of Harewood, Harewood House, Leeds, Christie's house sale, 3 October 1988, lot 170. A plate stand with similar turned stand was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 27 February 1992, lot 22.
