Lot Essay

The clock, conceived in the French antique or Pompeian manner, is incorporated in the wheels of the Sun-god Apollo's swan-drawn chariot, which is driven by loves. This model of clock was displayed in the celebrated Tichborne Street (now Titchborne Row) museum of clocks and mechanical curiosities established in the late 1790s by Thomas Weeks.

A similar clock with the dial signed 'Weeks Museum, Tichborne St.' was sold from the collection of the late Sir Martin Wilson, Bt., Sotheby's London, 1 November 1991, lot 11 and another from the collection of the late Dowager Viscountess Wimborne, was offered in these Rooms, 16 November 1995, lot 311.
