Lot Essay

A pair of krater-shaped pot-pourri perfume-vases of this pattern with laurel-wreathed feet and acanthus-wrapped bowls tied by a flowered ribbon-guilloche band, was sold by Avery's Ltd. in these Rooms, 25 June 1981, lot 6. Its form relates to a pattern invented about 1770 and preserved in the archives of Messrs. Boulton and Fothergill of Birmingham preserved in the Birmingham City Museum (N. Goodison, Ormolu: the work of Matthew Boulton, London, 1974, fig. 161, no. s).
