Lot Essay

A pair of related 'moving library' bookcases attributed to G. & R. Gillow of London and Lancaster were sold by Mr. and Mrs. Luke Dillon-Mahon, Clonbrock, Ahascragh, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, Christie's house sale, 1-3 November 1976, lot 12. One of these is illustrated in F. Collard, Regency Furniture, Woodbridge, 1985, p. 13. Gillows supplied the majority of the late Georgian and Regency furniture at Clonbrock, and their bill, dated June 1801, still survives.
