19th Century
Of later 17th Century Style, the circular tray-top with egg-and-dart edge above a waisted support on the head of a draped female herm with one raised arm, the tapering panelled pilaster with husk-trail to the front, on a foliate base above a gadrooned plinth supported by three scrolling feet centred by a foliate boss, gilding with minor areas of re-touching

Lot Essay

The basket-bearing nymph herm relates to patterns for gueridon-stands in the Louis XIV manner published in Daniel Marot's, Nouveau Livre d'Ornements, The Hague, c. 1700, pl. 2.
A similar pair of torchères were offered anonymously, Christie's New York, 20 March 1985, lot 159.
