A GEORGE III MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE-BOOKCASE
Crossbanded overall in tulipwood and inlaid with ebonised lines, the moulded rectangular cornice above a pair of Gothic glazed doors enclosing three adjustable shelves, the lower section with a fitted oval-panelled secretaire drawer with a green baize-lined writing surface, pigeon holes and mahogany-lined small drawers, above a pair of oval-panelled doors enclosing three sliding trays on shaped bracket feet, with dealer's label on the cornice for 'W.F. Greenwood & Sons, Ltd.,/Antiques,/24 Stoneygate, York, 10 Royal Parade, Harrogate', and inscribed in ink 'R. West, Firth Esq., Messr. Wade & Co./Lloyds Bank Chambers Hustlergate/Bradford.' and inscribed in chalk '20X', two panes cracked, the front of the interior secret drawers replaced, the sides with numerous filled holes, the right-hand side with further hinge marks probably for a later addition, the feet reduced

The oval and circular medallion inlay of the secretaire as well as the Gothic-arched glazing of its bookcase derive from patterns for 'Secretaires' designed by Thomas Shearer and published in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1788, pl. 7.
