RICHARD HAKLUYT (1552?-1616)
The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries. London: George Bishop, Ralph Newberie and Robert Barker, 1599-1600. 3 volumes, 2° (294-298 x 190mm). Black letter, suppressed leaves Eee4-Fff4 in vol.I supplied from a copy of the 1596 edition. (Occasional neat marginal repairs, 3 leaves with rustholes affecting a few characters.) Early-19th-century red straight-grained morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, gilt turn-ins, g.e., by I.Brooks (very light rubbing to extremities, spines a trifle darkened).
Second edition, second issue with 'yeres' reading on cancel title of vol.I. Many copies lack the account of the Cadiz expedition, which was suppressed (along with the first issue of the title of vol.I) by order of Queen Elizabeth after the disgrace of the Earl of Essex in 1599. The Molyneux-Wright world map that was intended to accompany vol.II (which deals primarily with the New World), was issued with only a handful of copies and is thus usually lacking (cf.Shirley 221). STC 12626a; Church 322; Sabin 29596-98. Uniformly bound copy with:A Selection of Curious, Rare, and Early Voyages... chiefly published by Hakluyt... to which, to Purchas, and other general collections, this is intended as A Supplement. London: G.Woodfall for R.H.Evans and R.Priestley, 1812. 4° (292 x 200mm). (General title and contents leaf misbound.) Red morocco (as above). Cf. Lowndes p.972. (4)
