SIR WILLIAM GORE OUSELEY (1797-1866)

Views in South America from original drawings made in Brazil the River Plate, the Parana, &c. London: Thomas McLean, [1852]. 2° (543 x 380mm). Tinted lithographic title, dedication to Prince Albert with list of the contents on the verso and 26 tinted lithographed plates (24 by J.Needham after Ouseley), one plan of Obligado.(Title one plate and plan lightly spotted, the second plate with small repair to outer blank margin.) Original red cloth, blocked in gilt and blind (rebacked, corners bumped).

This tinted issue appears, paradoxically, to be rarer than the hand-coloured one. The collection, apparently selected by Queen Victoria, includes 5 views of Bahia; 13 of Rio de Janeiro and 2 of Buenos Aires. M.Ouseley, given as the artist of of the fine view of Buenos Aires 'from the English Minister's Garden", is presumably Maria, Sir William's American wife. Sir William was a diplomat, who served with distinction in various posts in various parts of South America between 1832 and 1850. A Description of Views in South America, a 8° volume of descriptive text, was published in the same year. Tooley 356; Borba de Moraes II, p.643.
