Lot Essay

The Costumbrismo tradition flourished in the Spanish and Portugese colonies from South America to the Philippines in the first half of the nineteenth century. While some of the practitioners are recorded, such as Pancho Fierro and Bonnaffe in Lima, Guillobel in Rio de Janeiro and Lozano in Manila, the majority remain anonymous. The popular art was widely practised in Lima where the types and costumes are often repeated.
