One of several versions of Carter's composition, which appears to be inspired by Hodges' The Landing at Erramanga (in the New Hebrides), an incident on the second voyage, the other compositions of this subject being contemporary with, or later than, the publication date of the first engraving of Carter's composition. For a list of some of the versions by and after Carter, including engravings of the composition (the first published by the artist January 1 1784), see M.K. Beddie (ed.), Bibliography of Captain James Cook, Sydney, 1970, under 'Carter Group' nos. 2562-2572.
