Lot Essay

The drawing closely resembles in style and format Lesueur's pencil scenes from the life of the Aborigines though the islander's headdresses, the cactus and this particular event do not appear to be related directly to any of Lesueur's Australian drawings at Le Havre. The scene may represent a Malay gathering at Timor, perhaps one of Lesueur and Péron's encounters with the rajas on the return from their crocodile hunt in 1803 (for which see F. Péron, Voyage de découvertes aux terres australes, III, Paris, 1824, pp. 396-400).
