CHALLENGER EXPEDITION, 1872-76
An album containing 197 albumen prints including seven two-part panoramas, 6 x 15¾in., one three-part panorama, 5¼ x 19¾in., and two four-part panoramas, 5 x 28in., other sizes approx. 6 x 8in., variously mounted, titled in ink with pencil annotations on mounts, inscribed Presented to Colonel M.M.Richards by The Officers of H.M.S.Challenger in ink on front blank, contemporary green half morocco (worn), titled and ruled in gilt on upper cover, g.e., folio. Provenance: Colonel Richards (dedication); Mansell Collection (occasional ink stamps).

The Cruise of Her Majesty's Ship "Challenger"... eleventh edition. London: William Clowes & Sons, Limited for Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington Ltd., 1889. 8° (184 x 120mm). One folding lithographed map (repaired at fold), numerous plates and illustrations, including 45 mounted albumen prints, the majority hand-coloured (including portraits of the author, Professor Sir Charles Wyville Thomson and Captain Frank T.Thomson, each signed by the subjects on their mounts), extra-illustrated with seven additional mounted albumen prints, including a signed portrait of Captain Sir George S. Nares. (Two plates loosely inserted with cut-down mounts, the plate at p.14 lacking, frontispiece repaired.) Contemporary blue morocco gilt, g.e. (scuffed). Provenance: Mansell Collection (stamp on front free-endpaper. A specially prepared copy; together with a small collection of 16 albumen prints, all from the 'Challenger' expedition. (2)
