ADMIRAL SIR GEORGE BACK (1796-1878), LIEUTENANT HOOD and E. N. KENDALL.

A collection of 'proof' engravings from Sir John Franklin's first and second Arctic expeditions and Back's Great Fish River expedition. London: John Murray, 1823-1836.

20 plates (sheet size: 299 x 395mm.; plate size: 227 x 276mm. or 181 x 256mm). 17 uncoloured on india paper mounted (14 line engravings, 3 aquatint) and 3 hand-coloured (1 line engraving, 2 aquatint). (Neat repairs to seven plates.) Unbound.

[With:]
A cut down and mounted steel-engraved portrait of Back, by E.Finden after R.Woodman, published by John Murray, dated 1828, 80 x 120mm. Framed and glazed.

Sabin notes large paper copies, with proofs on india paper, of Franklin's Narrative of a Second Expedition to the Shores of the Polar Sea and Back's Narrative of the Arctic Land Expedition to the Mouth of the Great Fish River, but not for Franklin's first expedition. However this collection appears to have been printed by the publisher with no intention that they should be bound: it is possible that they form part of a set of proofs prepared for Sir George Back illustrating the expeditions in which he took part. Of particular interest is a variant of Abbey's plate 52 (by E.N.Kendall, titled 'Esquimaux encampment on Richard's Island'), but here by Back, titled 'Esquimaux encampment on Richar's Island'.

The collection comprises:
Seven plates from Back's Narrative of the Arctic Land Expedition (London: 1836), all line engravings, on india paper, mounted. Numbers 1, 4, 6-8, 11 and 13 according to the Directions for placing the Plates.
Nine plates from Franklin's Narrative of a Journey to the shores of the Polar Sea (London: 1823), 6 uncoloured plates (3 line engravings and 3 aquatints, all on india paper, mounted); 3 hand-coloured plates (2 aquatint and 1 line engraving). Abbey Travel 635 nos.3-4, 6-7, 18, 26, 29-31.
Four plates from Franklin's Narrative of a Second Expedition... (London: 1828), all line engravings, on india paper, mounted. Abbey Travel 635 nos.48, 52 (variant), 54 and 57. (21)
