Lot Essay

Royds was First Lieutenant and senior naval officer on board the Discovery on Scott's first Antarctic expedition of 1901-4. The Discovery sailed from New Zealand on Christmas Eve, 1901, and crossed the Antarctic circle of 2 January, the crew sighting icebergs for the first time on the same day. She passed through the pack ice guarding the Ross Sea and headed down the coast of South Victoria Land towards the smoking one of Mount Erebus and the Great Ice Barrier (now known as the Ross Ice Shelf), the southern shore of the Ross Sea. The Discovery sailed into McMurdo Sound on 8 February where she wintered. Scott, Shackleton and Wilson set out on their sledging journey south in November 1902, reaching a Furthest South of 82° 17'.
Royds' Discovery diaries 1901-3 are in a private collection.
