BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1910-1913
An Adelie Penguin (Pygoscelis Adeliae), stuffed and resting on stones painted with a grey-white patina and with a penguin egg and a replica skua egg, sent by Petty Officer Frank Browning from Terra Nova, Antarctica, February 1911. Displayed in a glass case, height of penguin approximately 470mm. Accompanied by signed photograph of and letter by Browning, framed and glazed. (Wood frame of case chipped, Browning letter soiled and 1916 note faded.)

Frank Browning accompanied Scott's second Antarctic Expedition of 1910-13. Also offered is a letter written on official expedition paper by Browning sent accompanying the penguin skin and eggs to Mr. Binmore of Torquay, dated from Terra Nova, Victoria Land, 13 February 1911: Enclosed is one penguin skin cured with arsenic soap also two Skua Gulls eggs.... According to a note added in 1916, the stones on which the penguin rests are from Victoria Land, and the eggs are penguin and skua; the skua egg has been replaced by a replica. Framed with the letter is a signed photograph of Browning in naval uniform with the Terra Nova hat-band. (2)
