A Meissen model of a Jay with a squirrel
Circa 1740, blue crossed swords mark to inside of base
Modelled by J.J. Kändler, the aggressive bird with black and white head, wing and tail feathers, the upper part of the wings in blue, the body with shaded puce and brown plumage perched above a red squirrel on a tapering tree-stump applied with oak-leaves and acorns, two bugs and two small groups of fungi and lightly enriched in green (end of left wing and beak restored, minor chipping and restoration to end of Jay's tail, squirrel lacking claws from right forepaw, part of branches lacking and some chipping to foliage)

See Kändler's Taxa for October 1739-January 1740 where this model is recorded, '1 Eichel Gabicht in Lebengrösse auf einem Stock sitzend, natürlich vorgestellet, neben dem ist ein Eichhorn in Lebensgrösse auf 1 Ast sitzend in Thon poussiert, nebst anderen daran befindlichen Zierrathen.'
