This ring commemorates the intervention of the French army in Spain where the prevailing state of anarchy threatened to endanger not only France but the rest of Europe. With the approval of the powers at the Congress of Verona, the Duc d'Angoulème, nephew of Louis XVIII, marched across the border on April 7, 1823 and succeeded in restoring order. Unfortunately reaction led to further crises which were only resolved in 1874 with the restoration of the monarchy under Alfonso XII
