Lot Essay

The lithograph shows the Albertplatz in Dresdener Nordstadt which the artist depicted in both drawings and in the important oil Das Boskett, Platz in Dresden (Gordon 198, private collection) around July of 1911. Kirchner exhibited the oil in the 1912 Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne.

The square contained a circular island, or bosket, planted with banana trees. The exotic vegetation captured the artist's imagination and formed a marked contrast to the stately buildings in the background and the elegant ladies strolling in the foreground.

The refinement and freedom of line show the mature artist at the height of his powers at the end of his Dresden period.
