Max Pechstein's submissions for the 1910 Berlin Secession Exhibition were turned down, so he inaugurated a 'New Secession' exhibition with other artists whose pictures had received similar treatment. All the remaining Brücke artists, including the new member Otto Mueller, also took part in this new exhibition as a gesture of solidarity.
Pechstein produced a similar lithograph of a female archer in the reverse direction and printed in black only (Krüger L109) and also used this lithograph as the basis for posters for future exhibitions of the Neue Secession, so that the subject became a symbol for the new generation of artists.
