woodcut, 1911, on thick, firm wove paper, a very fine impression of this rare print, probably first state (of two or three), printed with strong relief, signed in pencil, with margins, some foxing mainly in the lower margin, a soft crease across the lower left sheet corner, one or two other soft, unobtrusive creases, some surface dirt mainly on the reverse, otherwise generally in very good condition

Lot Essay

Whilst Schiefler defines a second state as having the upper left corner of the print as a solid black mass (citing only about four known examples), his illustrated example in the catalogue does not conform to this, and the singer's individual strands of hair remain visible as in his first state.
