Lot Essay

Geneigter Frauenkopf is derived from Lehmbruck's celebrated sculpture Knieende which he conceived in Paris in 1911. A version was exhibited at the Salon d'Automne that year.

Another Valsuani cast of this piece, formerly in the Artist's Estate, is now in the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg.

We are grateful to Professor Dieter Schubert for his help in cataloguing this work.
